COGGO Varieties - Canola

Canola Breeders WA Pty Ltd named its first varieties in 2003. Trilogy, Tribune and Trigold are the first of CBWAs range of T TOP ™ (Triazine Tolerant, Open Pollinated) varieties. Blackleg in Canola

Identification of a new strain of the fungus virulent for the ‘sylvestris’ major gene for resistance to blackleg in canola is concerning all canola growers. For further information go to the Canola Breeders WA web site at: http://www.cbwa.net.au

CBWA Boomer

(Tested as CBTT-026 or CBWA-026)

  • CBWA Boomer is a large seeded Ttop® (triazine tolerant open pollinated) canola with vigorous early growth. It is a sister line of CBWA Tribune, which has been withdrawn because it has the “sylvestris” blackleg resistance gene. CBWA Boomer has polygenic resistance to blackleg with a provisional rating of 6.5 on the National Brassica Improvement Program scale.
  • CBWA Boomer has the largest seeds of any variety on the market – normally above 400 mg per 100 seeds, and on average 25% larger than CBWA Tribune and 35% larger than ATR-Beacon. This provides the variety with much greater vigour early in the season. As with all CBWA varieties, CBWA recommends early fertilizer application to CBWA Boomer to promote growth before flowering, to promote yield potential.
  • CBWA Boomer flowers 1-2 days ahead of CBWA Tribune and 7-9 days ahead of ATR-Beacon. It is well adapted to the medium rainfall cropping zone of southern Australia (350-550 mm). Moderate pod shatter resistance and uniform maturity makes it a candidate variety for direct harvest.
  • Oil and protein in seed of CBWA Boomer is similar to that in ATR-Beacon. Glucosinolates are very low.
  • Yield of CBWA Boomer is 5-8% higher than CBWA Tribune and ATR-Beacon in medium rainfall regions.
  • CBWA Boomer was bred by Canola Breeders Western Australia Pty Ltd and is protected by PBR. Demonstration plots of CBWA Boomer are on several grower properties in Western Australia– look out for the signs on main roads, for farmer-scale trials conducted by Oilseeds WA, and the National Variety Trials (NVT).
