Research grants up to $150,000 available for 2027

The Council of Grain Grower Organisations Limited (COGGO) has announced they will again offer grants of up to $150,000 for innovative research and development projects.

In calling for Expressions of Interest, Chris Wilkins the Chairman of COGGO said “COGGO is pleased to announce a new round of funding innovative research and development projects commencing in 2027 that will improve the profitability and sustainability on farms and the growth of the WA grains industry.”

“Over the past 14 years the COGGO Research Fund has supported over 80 research projects with funding in excess of $6.2 million across a diverse range of areas, from crop breeding and agronomy to climate resilience and value-added grain products.”

COGGO will consider projects that target any part of the Western Australian grain supply chain and return benefits to WA grain growers.

Funding for projects can range from $20,000 to $75,000 per annum over a project life of one or two years, to a maximum of $150,000.

In February, COGGO announced projects commencing this year, that successfully received funding through the grant process. They are:

  • Murdoch University: Deeper Roots, Higher Yields: Manipulating OPRIII-Mediated Root Architecture for Drought-Resilient Barley in Western Australia.
  • Murdoch University: “Developing a cost-effective and rapid genotyping method for the 7D inversion controlling heading date and yield potential in Oat.
  • Murdoch University: Development of accurate near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy models to measure alpha-amylase activity in wheat as an alternative.

Expression of Interest applications for prospective 2027 projects are available at www.giwa.org.au/industry-projects/coggo  or by phoning (08) 6262 2128.

The closing date for initial EOI applications is 5pm Tuesday 30 June 2026. Accepted EOIs will be invited to submit a full project proposal for projects ready to commence in 2027.
